If you have been feeling like the current battle royale formula is getting a little too stale, Activision is about to violently shake things up. Launching tonight, March 12, Call of Duty is dropping a massive new update into Warzone called Black Ops Royale. And if that name sounds incredibly familiar, it should, because the developers are taking us straight back to the golden days of Blackout.
Let us break down exactly what is coming to the brand new Avalon map.
Forget everything you know about grinding for your perfect custom weapon drop. Black Ops Royale is completely stripping away the modern crutches. There are no Buy Stations, no Loadouts, and absolutely no Gulag. When you wingsuit onto the massive Avalon map, you are starting with nothing but your fists.
The entire focus is back on pure scavenging. You will be hunting for Black Ops 7 weapons and upgrading them through a five tier rarity system. By finding Attachment Kits, you can push your base ground loot all the way up to Legendary status before you take on the remaining 24 enemy squads.
The nostalgia trip does not stop at the looting system. The developers are bringing back the classic Blackout inspired equipment that made the original mode so incredibly chaotic. We are talking about the Grappling Hook for insane Omnimovement plays, Sensor Darts to lock down buildings, and the return of the Trauma Kit to instantly boost your health during a firefight. You can now carry two different types of equipment at once, so the tactical possibilities are completely wide open.
Instead of locking in a permanent perk package before the match begins, the perk system is completely consumable now. You will find swappable boosts scattered around the map that you activate exactly when you need them, allowing your squad to adapt on the fly during a chaotic push.
And because this is a Black Ops experience, you know they had to throw some zombies into the mix. During the match, random Cradle Breaches will flood specific zones with toxic red gas. If your squad is brave enough to dive into the corruption and defeat the hallucinated zombie hordes and the massive Mangler Boss, you will be rewarded with the absolute best armor and weaponry in the game.
Death is not necessarily the end either. Since the Gulag is officially gone, your squad will have to rely on consumable redeploy tokens or fight to capture extremely loud Redeploy Towers to bring you back into the action.
This update sounds like the exact shot of adrenaline the franchise needed. Taking away custom loadouts forces everyone to adapt and use weapons they would normally ignore, which instantly raises the skill ceiling. Mixing the beloved Blackout mechanics with the incredibly fluid modern movement system on a massive new map like Avalon is an absolute recipe for pure cinematic chaos.
For BREAK THE META, this is WILD SURF. Catch you on the next drop!
