Neon, Guns, and Oxygen: Bungie’s Marathon Sprints to Launch

Bungie is finally stepping out of the Destiny shadow, and they aren’t doing it quietly. After years of trailers that looked like high-fashion fever dreams, Marathon is officially sprinting toward its global launch on March 5, 2026. This isn’t the single-player corridor shooter from the 90s; Bungie has pivoted to the extraction shooter genre, pitting teams of “Runners” against each other on the derelict, high-contrast world of Tau Ceti IV.

The game is wrapping up it’s “Server Slam” open beta tomorrow, and the numbers are staggering. Reaching a peak of over 143,000 concurrent players on Steam alone, it’s clear the appetite for a Bungie-flavored tactical shooter is massive. However, it wasn’t all smooth sailing in the neon rain. Players were quick to point out a notoriously complex UI and a controversial “Heat” movement mechanic that punishes aggressive players a bit too harshly. Bungie has already issued a “feedback sheet” promising to iterate on these systems post-launch.

Unlike the $70 price tags currently haunting our wallets, Marathon is launching with a Standard Edition price of $39.99. It features full cross-play and cross-save across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. In a refreshing move for a Sony-backed title, you won’t even need a PlayStation Network account to play on PC or Xbox.

One of the coolest features for the tactical crowd is the “Fog of War” anti-cheat system. To combat the wall-hacks that plague games like Tarkov, Bungie’s engine literally refuses to send enemy data to your computer until they are within your line of sight. It’s a clever bit of engineering that ensures your hard-earned loot stays yours—at least until a rival Runner catches you lacking in proximity chat.

The servers officially go live at 10:00 AM PST / 1:00 PM EST on March 5. If you’re playing on PS5 with a PlayStation Plus sub, keep an eye out for exclusive weapon charms inspired by Helldivers 2 and Ghost of Yotei. It’s a high-stakes gamble for Bungie, but if the gunplay feels even half as good as Halo, we’re in for a wild ride.
