Missed Opportunity- No Uncle Ben in the Marvel Cinematic/Sony Spider-Verse

By Wayne Royale

If we are counting as five movies, first debuting into the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Captain America- Civil War, Tom Holland’s Spider-Man came in as a member of Team Iron Man and then later starred in Spiderman- Homecoming and then helped fight Thanos and his forces in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, we have seen amazing performances and the younger take on Peter Parker in the shared universe between Marvel and Sony but we did have a missed opportunity in part of what makes Peter Parker’s Spider-Man great which is even though, Peter looks up to Tony Stark/Iron Man…the truth of the matter is that we never got Uncle Ben.

Uncle Ben taught Peter that with great power comes great responsibility. This statement has always reminded Spidey that he needs to be humble and has gone on to define Peter Parker as a character both inside and outside of the costume. It seemed like in Civil War when Tony was asking Peter why he does what he does that we almost could have got a reference to Ben Parker.

In the Marvel/Sony Spider-Man movies with Peter being under the wing of Stark spoiled the character. Without a father figure such as Uncle Ben Parker, Peter was first spoiled when given the iconic suit in Civil War and then he used the same suit in Homecoming which with the help of his friend, Ned Leeds, Spidey was able to unlock secret modes that Tony didn’t want him to have access to until a certain period. Also, in the second follow-up movie, Far From Home, Peter makes several mistakes such as first using E.D.I.T.H tech sunglasses that Tony left to Peter after passing away in Avengers: Endgame to accidentally order a drone strike on the same bus that he was in Europe on against a classmate who finds his identity when Nick Fury’s agents were giving Peter the stealth suit (aka Night Monkey lol) to and then the second mistake, giving the E.D.I.T.H tech glasses to Mysterio.

I know Marvel may have not wanted to kill Uncle Ben after having him die in the Raimi Spiderman movies and the Amazing Spider-Man movie, but I feel like Marvel/Sony could have referenced Ben’s name a few times or have given Ben some screenshare time via flashbacks. Yes, the Spiderman movies have done a great job of giving Peter supporting characters such as Aunt May, Gwen Stacy, Mary Jane, and Ned Leeds and now, I also hope after teasing us in Homecoming, that we soon get Miles Morales who later goes on to become the Black/Latino Spider-Man as well. I know some blogs have gone against having Uncle Ben killed and I agree but you can still reference Ben Parker without killing him. It happened the same way that Batman’s parents were killed but still, he is a part of why Peter Parker is such a remarkable young man.

The next Spiderman movie that’s shared between Marvel and Sony will be Spider-Man- No Way Home which is gonna be crazy because it will feature Doctor Strange, Jamie Foxx’s Electro, Alfred Molina’s Doctor Octopus and we may be getting back Charlie Cox’s Daredevil could also have a few lines mentioning Ben Parker. Come on Marvel and Sony, let’s go with this, please.

What do you think?
