If you were wondering why the entire VALORANT timeline threw a massive watch party just to see Gentle Mates lose, you have to look at the whole picture. The EMEA powerhouse has officially been eliminated from Masters Santiago, and it is a classic esports tale of massive egos, spicy arena drama, and ultimate heartbreak.
Let us break down exactly how M8 went from the villains of EMEA to catching an early flight home!
To understand the community reaction, we have to rewind to the EMEA Kickoff matches against the Turkish heavyweights, BBL Esports. The drama went absolutely nuclear before anyone even packed their bags for Chile.
Starxo and the M8 squad were reportedly taunting the passionate BBL fans right in the arena, with starxo even going as far as calling them losers. But when the crowd returned the energy and started yelling things like “go back to tier 2” during the post match interviews, starxo took to X to complain about the harassment. The competitive community instantly labeled him as soft for dishing out the disrespect but playing the victim when the fans clapped back. They positioned themselves as the arrogant villains, and the fans were just waiting for them to slip up.
Fast forward to Chile. After a flawless undefeated run through the Swiss Stage, Gentle Mates looked like they might actually back up their talk. But their upper bracket playoff run came to a screeching halt against the Pacific first seed, Nongshim RedForce.
Despite a valiant effort on Haven and the new map Corrode, NSR clutched up the late rounds to sweep the series 2 to 0. It was a razor thin margin, but NSR just had better late game discipline, sending M8 straight down to the terrifying lower bracket.
Falling to the elimination bracket, M8 faced off against China’s All Gamers. Keep in mind, before playing M8, AG had not won a single map at the entire tournament!
Things started incredibly strong for Gentle Mates. They completely dominated their map pick of Pearl with a 13 to 5 victory. But then the wheels completely fell off. All Gamers woke up and steamrolled M8 on Split with a brutal 13 to 4 scoreline. It all came down to Bind. Despite an absolute masterclass from M8 star duelist marteen, who was putting up nuclear stats to try and carry his team, All Gamers adapted and locked it down. AG took the decider map 13 to 8, officially sending Gentle Mates packing.
Watching M8 crumble while one player desperately tried to save the series was poetic justice for the haters. The casters even dropped a legendary roast on the broadcast, mocking the EMEA scene by calling them a one team region.
You simply cannot ragebait an entire fanbase, taunt them in the arena, and then cry when they yell at you. It is the golden rule of esports: if you are going to talk the talk, you better win the trophy! Marteen played absolutely out of his mind and proved he is one of the best in the world, but starxo and the rest of the squad will never live down this elimination. It makes for incredible entertainment though, and we absolutely need more villains in the VCT!
For BREAK THE META, this is WILD SURF. Catch you on the next drop!
