If you have been using the Thief shell to fly across Tau Ceti IV like a bio-cybernetic projectile, Bungie just pulled the plug. Update 1.0.5.2 officially went live today, March 31, 2026, and it carries a heavy-hitting message for anyone relying on “unintended” movement tech to survive their runs. The days of bypassing the risk of the open map through slide-cancel glitches are officially over.
Bungie was surprisingly blunt in the patch notes about this one. They stated that rapid repositioning must always have a meaningful cost, whether that is an ability charge, heat buildup, or just flat-out risk. According to the devs, while that kind of unbounded movement makes for great clips, it is ultimately “unhealthy” for the tactical pace they want for Marathon.
The End of the Thief Grapple Glitch
The centerpiece of this update is a direct fix for the momentum exploit involving the Thief’s Grapple Device. Previously, players could manipulate the slide-cancel animation while pulling out equipment or using the grapple to maintain insane bursts of speed.
- The Reality Check: You can no longer stack momentum through these animations. If you want to move fast, you have to play the game the way it was designed: managing your stamina and using your abilities as intended, not as a physics-breaking shortcut.
- The Warning Shot: Bungie also noted that they will be looking at all future movement exploits through this same lens. If you find a new way to glitch across the map, do not expect it to stay in the game for long.
Buffs for the Bold: Pinwheel and Outpost Changes
It is not all bad news for the Runners. To balance out the movement nerfs, Bungie is incentivizing players to actually engage with the high-stakes areas of the Outpost map.
- The Pinwheel Loot Buff: The Pinwheel, that notorious sky-high treasure chest, just got a massive loot upgrade. This includes the quality of loose loot and small containers, making it a much more viable destination for those looking for high-tier mods.
- Reopened Entry: The “Destroyed Wing” entrance to the Pinwheel has been officially reopened. It was previously a point of contention for being too easy to infiltrate, but it is back with updated encounters that match the new reward quality.
- Tox Warden Adjustments: The combat area for the Tox Warden has been redesigned to reduce hiding spots, and the Tox plants now actually react correctly to player presence. You can’t just hide in a corner and cheese the encounter anymore.
Technical Polish and Quality of Life
Beyond the balance changes, 1.0.5.2 brings some much-needed stability to the Armory and the HUD.
- Armory Performance: Fixed a crash that occurred when opening the Armory and addressed the low frame rates some players were seeing in tabs with too many items. As Bungie put it: “Traxus operates beyond scale.”
- Keybind Clarity: The ESC key now correctly exits the keybinding menu instead of closing the entire settings menu, and there is finally an option to clear keybinds entirely.
- UI Fixes: They’ve addressed a weird issue where Diamond rank challenges were showing up before Platinum in the Codex, and the “Requiem for a Cyborg” challenge now correctly tracks progress for the entire crew after a Compiler kill.
