Revealed during the massive Future Games Show Spring Showcase, the upcoming open world survival title Permafrost just dropped a brand new trailer that looks absolutely punishing.

After a catastrophic lunar event known as The Shattering completely destroyed the moon, the entire planet was plunged into a global ice age. Now, you have to emerge into the blinding white hell and try to scratch out a living in the frozen ruins of civilization.

The Ultimate Winter Survival

The developers are leaning heavily into the extreme elements. You are not just fighting off standard enemies; the cold itself is the absolute biggest threat on the map.

Here is what you need to know before you step out into the snow:

• Deep Survival Mechanics: You have to carefully manage your body temperature, exhaustion, and hunger. Getting caught in a freak blizzard while exploring the ruined cities will literally freeze you to death if you do not scramble to build a makeshift shelter.
• The Loyal Companion: You do not have to brave the wasteland alone! Even if you play entirely solo, you get a loyal dog by your side to help you track wild game, carry extra resources, and sniff out hidden loot buried in the snow.
• Squad Up: If you prefer playing with a full crew, the game features online co op for up to four players. You can work together to build massive fortresses and hunt down dangerous animals like bears and wolf packs.
• Faction Warfare: The wilderness is packed with hostile survivors. You can choose to align with rival factions to secure trade routes or go to war with them for control over scarce resources.

The Upcoming Playtest

The survival genre has been absolutely massive lately, but throwing players into a perpetual winter where building a fire is literally a matter of life and death is a fantastic twist. Plus, adding a dog companion that actually helps you survive instead of just being a cosmetic pet is a massive win!

Permafrost is officially launching into Early Access on PC via Steam later this year, but you do not have to wait that long to test your skills. The developers announced that playtest registrations are completely open right now on their Steam page, giving you a chance to experience the brutal cold before the official launch.
