If you are craving some pure 1980s B movie chaos, your weekend plans are officially set. Saber Interactive just launched their brand new first person shooter, John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando, and it is bringing absolute carnage to PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series consoles starting today!

The developers behind World War Z have completely leaned into the over the top aesthetic of classic horror cinema. The setup is brilliantly simple. An experimental drill tapped into the Earth core and accidentally unleashed an eldritch abomination known as the Sludge God. Now, the entire region is terraforming into toxic sludge, and the locals are turning into massive hordes of undead monsters. The genius who caused the disaster wanted to hire highly trained professionals to fix his mess, but since they were too expensive, you and your squad of cheap mercenaries have to step up.

Mudrunner Meets Left 4 Dead

What really separates this game from the rest of the crowded zombie shooter genre is the heavy focus on vehicle combat. The development team actually pitched the game as World War Z crossing over with Mudrunner. You are not just running through linear corridors. The missions take place in massive semi open environments where you and up to three friends can jump into armored jeeps and literally plow through hundreds of monsters at once.

The game runs on the impressive Swarm Engine, meaning you will face towering pyramids of undead trying to rip you out of your driver seat. You can split the party to tackle multiple objectives at once or stick together to create the ultimate mobile fortress.

Progression and The Offline Debate

The progression loop is incredibly addictive. Exploring the maps rewards you with currency to upgrade your weapons, unlock new class abilities, and customize your ridiculous vehicles. Whether you want to focus on explosive heavy weapons or slice through the horde with a katana, the skill tree lets you build the perfect apocalypse survivor.

However, the launch has not been entirely without controversy. The community was recently frustrated to learn that the game requires a persistent internet connection. While you can absolutely play the entire campaign solo with bots, the developers explained that the server connection is necessary to handle streaming the massive map textures without completely melting your hardware.

Despite the always online requirement, reviews are praising the game for delivering exactly what it promises. It is a loud, messy, and incredibly fun arcade experience that strips away modern live service bloat in favor of pure adrenaline. If you have a dedicated squad ready to blast some synth music and run over some zombies, this is an absolute must play.

For BREAK THE META, this is WILD SURF. Catch you on the next drop!
